Electrical Controls Engineer

PDC International Corp., located in Norwalk, CT engineers, manufactures and distributes machinery for applying Heat Shrinkable Tamper-Evident Seals and Sleeve Labels worldwide to customers such as Kraft Foods, Johnson and Johnson, Proctor & Gamble, Unilever, and Nestle to name a few. PDC also fabricates both Hot/Air & Steam Shrink Tunnels.

The Electrical Controls Engineer will be positioned at PDC’s Norwalk, CT Corporate Office with 10% to 15% travel.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop/write program automation logic to control automated systems
    • Create and read logic and flow diagrams for program design
    • Ability to program several families of Allen-Bradley PLC’s servo controlled, and integrate various machine vision systems and printers
    • Assist with standardizing/modularizing PLC programs
  • Create software design documents (SDS, flowchart, etc.)
  • Working within the project budgetary guidelines.
  • Utilize CAD systems to design and develop control system schematics for automated equipment
    • Produce wiring diagrams, assembly diagrams, and layout drawings
    • Ensure system designs meet customer specifications
  • Develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) that allow for intuitive system control
  • Commissioning of created programs and testing/debugging equipment to ensure proper functionality
  • Ensure full functionality of equipment along with all integrated devices, including, but not limited to printers, vision systems, code readers, and other third-party packaging equipment.
  • Advise on new approaches and techniques to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness of automated control systems and internal workflows
  • Review customer specifications to determine what project requirements
    • Assist in proposal creation for non-standard items
  • Review Customer Specifications – examine customer requirements as they relate to standard features    
  • Install and Test programs – must have the ability to work in an assembly environment with technicians to bring up machinery
  • Participate in Customer Discussions and Factory Acceptance Test – possess strong interpersonal skills in interacting with customers during the entire scope of the project from start to finish
  • Provide Technical Support - both internally and externally with customers.  Some customer support will require traveling to sites for equipment installation or field issues   

Job Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field and 10 years of experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment that involves automated control systems design and programming of PLCs and motion control, preferably in the packaging automation industry. 
  • Must have a strong understanding of the electrical and software engineering principles needed to create and maintain automated processes
  • Strong knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC systems and proven competence with current application platforms
  • Proven ability with ladder logic PLC programming (structured text a plus)
  • Demonstrated ability to design and program motion control systems
  • Proven ability to successfully interact with clients from project initiation through equipment commissioning and factory acceptance testing (FAT)
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize AutoCAD Electrical for schematic and panel design/layout
  • Must be capable of multitasking in a rapid paced environment with changing priorities
  • Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to self-direct on projects
  • Clear and positive communicator
