PDC recently celebrated over 50 years of business as an Industry Leader and has been awarded as a Connecticut Top Workplace.  Located in Norwalk, CT, PDC engineers, manufactures, and distributes machinery for applying Heat Shrinkable Tamper-Evident Seals and Sleeve Labels worldwide to such customers as Kraft Foods, Johnson and Johnson, Proctor & Gamble, Unilever, Nestle to name a few.  PDC also fabricates both Hot Air & Steam Shrink Tunnels.

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be positioned at PDC’s Norwalk, CT Corporate Office with 10% to 15% travel.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Machine Design – design and develop custom assemblies and machines, from concept through manufacturing and testing, including modeling parts and assemblies in 3D.  Autodesk Inventor or other parametric software proficiency required. 
  • Review customer specifications and identify changes to standard equipment required to meet requirements.
  • Construct accurate and complete bills of material based on designs that conform to cost and performance objectives.
  • Maintain documentation including assembly drawings and bills of material in ERP software.
  • Part and Assembly Drawings – create detailed drawings for use in fabrication, assembly, and customer documentation.
  • Interface with manufacturing and assembly to ensure parts are machined and installed in conformance with design.
  • Layout Drawings – create machine installation and layout drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Project Supervision – track project status to maintain schedule and meet budgetary goals.
  • Parts and Vendor Research – research new technology and components and interact with vendors or distributors as needed.
  • Assembly Support – must be able to work in an assembly environment with technicians to assist test and debug machinery.
  • Derive conclusions from system observation and apply practical improvements.
  • Participate in Customer Discussions and Factory Acceptance Test – must possess strong interpersonal skills in interacting with customers during the entire scope of the project from start to finish.
  • Provide Technical and Sales Support - both internally and externally with customers.  Some customer support will require traveling to sites for pre-sales project reviews or post-installation field issues.

Job Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field
  • 10 years of experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment that involved dynamic mechanical system design, preferably in the packaging industry
  • Demonstrated skill in automated machine design using Autodesk Inventor or equivalent 3D modeling software, including part detailing, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Demonstrated performance with AutoCAD design software
  • Expert level knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes and assembly operations is required
  • Knowledge of packaging machinery, as well as shrink film printing and converting considered assets
  • Must be capable of multitasking in a rapid paced environment with changing priorities
  • Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Clear and positive communicator
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team
  • Ability to prioritize tasks driven by deadlines and urgency, and work independently as a specialist with minimal supervision or guidance
  • Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Office products
